A major operator in Guinea has announced that it will introduce mobile data plans as well as mobile payments in the first quarter of 2013. MTN Guinea will offer the new services following an upgrade to its network infrastructure.

The operator provides wireless services via WiMAX, which it introduced to the country in 2011. The operator’s CEO, Phumzile Joshua Phike, stated that this service was being enhanced in order to offer new services. The new offering will encompass mobile money transfer services, data plans and mobile payment services.

Present in the market since 2006, MTN Guinea now has around 2.5 million subscribers. By adding mobile payment services to its offering, the operator is hoping to capitalise on the increasing interest in mobility in a country with a relatively low penetration rate.
