Dunun (Malinké Bass Drum) Workshop

with Alan Tauber

Friday, March 9, 2012

Learn the secrets of the melodies of the dunun of the Malinké.

7PM - 9:00PM at The DrumConnection

All welcome! It’s FUN! All levels - you will learn a LOT!

Come learn how to play these magical drums of the Malinké. Using sticks in the right and left hand we play the bell and the bass drum and create the melodies that make up the songs of the Malinké. There is nothing more beautiful to be apart of recreating this music.

Alan’s system of teaching the dunun drums is unique and makes for faster learning and remembering of rhythms. We plan to work on one full rhythm with kenkeni, sangban and dununba sections. We will also learn variations for the songs and go in and out of variations creating an arrangement. We will also add Intro and Outro sections that will complete the workshop and the musical pieces. Echauffements will be taught and emphasized.

You will come away a better player, more relaxed, more focussed, and have better control of the sticks and the sound of the drums!

Please bring a recorder and maybe a pen and paper. And a dunun is optional, use one of ours!

Refreshments served.

$30.- (cash, check or credit card)

We will send you a registration and confirmation email.

Doors will open 15 minutes before class time.
